Parma's elegant old town gathers impressive monuments dating back to the period of the city-republics, such as the Duomo and the Baptistry. Parma's Duomo is one of the most important examples of Romanesque architecture in Italy. Its impressive facade hosts three rows of arches, while the apse is crowned by a large dome. Its interior cherishes precious frescos which were realized between ‘400 and ‘500. The painting that fills the main cupola, the “Assumption” by Correggio, makes it renowned all over the world  Both the altar and the south trasept feature carved friezes and reliefs dating back to the XII century which were realized by Benedetto Antelami and his pupils. Next to the Duomo is the Baptistry, an impressive octagonal structure which is largerly built of pink marble. The inner reliefs by Antelami are among the most important Romanesque artworks in Italy.
Behind the Duomo is the Church of St. John the Evangelist, whose interior features precious frescos by Correggio, Parmigianino and further 16th-century artists.
Strada Garibaldi leads to the Royal Theatre, which attracts large numbers of opera enthusiasts, and to the church of Madonna della Steccata, which was realized in the 16th century in the Renaissance style and is decorated with precious frescos realized by skilled pupils from the local school. Via Melloni leads to the ancient convent of the Benedictine Sisters. Only two rooms are open to the general public: the Bedroom of the Mother Superior Giovanna, the so-called Bedroom of St. Paolo, hosts one of the most famous frescos by Correggio.
The nearby Piazzale Marconi leads to the sumptuous Palazzo della Pilotta, which was commissioned by the Farnese Dukes in the 16th century. It hosts the National Archaeological Museum, the National Art Gallery, which gathers precious masterpieces belonging to the Farnese collection, and Farnese Theatre, one of the oldest theatres in Europe. Behind the huge building, the Verdi Bridge which crosses the river Taro leads to the lush Ducal Park and Palace. Art lovers will have the opportunity to visit the famous Stuard Art Gallery, an interesting collection which gathers precious artworks belonging to four different centuries. Four kilometres far from the city centre is the famous Charterhouse of Parma, which was founded in the 13th century.
