Visiting Parma
Founded in 183 BC, Parma is an elegant and charming resort situated just in the heart of Northern Italy. It is a traditional holiday destination for those interested in precious historical finds, genuine traditions and local usages and customs. Renowned all over the world for its inestimable artistic heritage and the high standards of living it offers local inhabitants, it welcomes thousands of tourists all year round.
One of the most appreciated artistic cities in Italy, Parma gathers comfortable 3-star guesthouses and luxury 4-star hotels which give guests the possibility to spend unforgettable holidays here. Not to be missed are cheap guesthouses and budget hotels, which give tourists the possibility to visit the city at reasonable prices, as well as intimate bed and breakfasts and charming holiday farms, the ideal accommodation facilities for young couples or small groups of friends.
Those flocking to Parma will be spoilt for choice: they will have the possibility to explore both artistic, musical, historical and gastronomic itineraries.
Parma's elegant old town gathers impressive monuments dating back to the period of the city-republics, such as the Duomo and the Baptistry. Parma's Duomo is one of the most important examples of Romanesque architecture in Italy. Its impressive facade hosts three rows of arches, while the apse is crowned by a large dome. Its interior cherishes precious frescos which were realized between ‘400 and ‘500. The painting that fills the main cupola, the “Assumption” by Correggio, makes it renowned all over the world Both the altar and the south trasept feature carved friezes and reliefs dating back to the XII century which were realized by Benedetto Antelami and his pupils. Next to the Duomo is the Baptistry, an impressive octagonal structure which is largerly built of pink marble. The inner reliefs by Antelami are among the most important Romanesque artworks in Italy.
Behind the Duomo is the Church of St. John the Evangelist, whose interior features precious frescos by Correggio, Parmigianino and further 16th-century artists.
Strada Garibaldi leads to the Royal Theatre, which attracts large numbers of opera enthusiasts, and to the church of Madonna della Steccata, which was realized in the 16th century in the Renaissance style and is decorated with precious frescos realized by skilled pupils from the local school. Via Melloni leads to the ancient convent of the Benedictine Sisters. Only two rooms are open to the general public: the Bedroom of the Mother Superior Giovanna, the so-called Bedroom of St. Paolo, hosts one of the most famous frescos by Correggio.
The nearby Piazzale Marconi leads to the sumptuous Palazzo della Pilotta, which was commissioned by the Farnese Dukes in the 16th century. It hosts the National Archaeological Museum, the National Art Gallery, which gathers precious masterpieces belonging to the Farnese collection, and Farnese Theatre, one of the oldest theatres in Europe. Behind the huge building, the Verdi Bridge which crosses the river Taro leads to the lush Ducal Park and Palace. Art lovers will have the opportunity to visit the famous Stuard Art Gallery, an interesting collection which gathers precious artworks belonging to four different centuries. Four kilometres far from the city centre is the famous Charterhouse of Parma, which was founded in the 13th century.
Parma arranges absorbing cultural events and activities all year round. The native town of Toscanini, Verdi and further great exponents of the history of world music, Parma regularly stages musical reviews, festivals and prestigious initiatives. Both Parma's traditional cooking and local staples are famous all over the world: not to be missed are Parmesan cheese, Parma ham, fine wines and mouth-watering desserts, such as the local chocolate cake and the so-called “scarpette di S.Ilario”, which are prepared every year on January 13 on the occasion of the patronal festival.
