The province of Ogliastra, situated in the central eastern part of Sardinia, is named after a peculiar administrative division of the region, which was subdivided into fifteen different municipalities in 1807. The current capitals of Ogliastra are Tortolì and Lanusei, the former overlooking the Tyrrhenian Coast and provided with an important port and airport, and the latter situated just in the heart of the Sardinian hinterland and scattered with thick woods and breathtaking views over the surrounding coastline and mountains.

The hinterland cherishes the picturesque village of Lanusei, which is situated just in the heart of a wide natural amphitheatre nestling on the slopes of the Gennargentu mountains. Selene Forest hosts an important  Archaeological Park gathering the remains of an ancient nuraghic village and well-preserved funerary monuments. A short distance from Lanusei is Lago Alto del Flumendosa, an artificial basin which was created along the deviation of the river Flumendosa and is surrounded by lush woods and almost unspoilt natural settings.
