Visiting Nuoro
Nuoro, a provincial capital of Sardinia, is situated just in the heart of a large granitic tableland surrounded by lush valleys, sweet hills and impressive mountains which make the surrounding landscape a rough and fascinating one. It is the native town of several important personalities, such as Grazia Deledda, Sebastiano Satta and Salvatore Satta, whose works of art depict the city as it was between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, when many quarters have not developed yet and local inhabitants depended on agriculture and sheep-breeding. Nuoro is the privileged holiday destination for those looking for a closer touch with the charming atmosphere of the island.
The city, which is said to be the Sardinian capital of folklore and traditions since it hosts the largest Ethnographic Museum of the island and plenty of folk events which mark the passing of the seasons, attracts increasing numbers of tourists, giving them the opportunity to stay at modern accommodation facilities, luxury 4-star hotels and comfortable 3-star guesthouses. Those looking for short stays in the old town can take advantage of intimate bed and breakfasts and budget hotels which are situated a short distance from the main highlights of the surrounding area.
One of the most important cultural and artistic monuments of the old town is the Cathedral of St. Maria della Neve, a Neoclassical building which cherishes a seventeenth-century painting by Alessandro Tiarini, the seventeenth-century Church of Madonna delle Grazie, one of the most important sacred buildings in the city, and the small church of Nostra Signora della Solitudine, which cherishes the mortal remains of Grazia Deledda.
The street leading to the House-Museum of Grazia Deledda, the latter cherishing her books, documents and personal items, is named after the famous novelist, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1926. One of Nuoro's central squares is dedicated to writer Sebastiano Satta: architect Costantino Nivola strove to turn this square into a sort of a commemorative monument gathering outstanding sculptures and architectures which pay homage to one of its most illustrious citizens.
A short distance from the old town are Mount Ortobene, which boasts breathtaking views over the Gennargentu massif, the dramatic Supramonte, the sea and Mount Corrasi in Oliena, the archaeological site of Borbore, which gathers the so-called “houses of the fairies”, impressive necropolises dating back to 3000 BC, the ancient village of Lollove, which gathers ancient houses commanded by the seventeenth-century church of the Maddalena, and MAN (Art Museum Nuoro Province), which regularly arranges important temporary exhibitions gathering internationally renowned artists. Not to be missed are Nuoro's religious celebrations and folk festivals, such as the Sagra del Redentore festival, which takes place during the week of August 29, the festival of St. Anthony the Great on January 17 and the so-called carnevale barbaricino, when the city is livened up by floats and fancy-dress parties and a great concert is held in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele.
