Visiting Medio Campidano

The province of Medio Campidano, situated along Sardinia's western coast, extends just in the heart of a fascinating territory of tremendous contrasts encompassing breathtaking natural beauties. The plain of Campidano is bounded by the hills of Marmilla to the east and the Massif of Mount Linas to the west, the latter being scattered with rough natural landscapes gathering impressive waterfalls, thick woods of holm-oaks, imposing granite walls and beguiling streams. The coastline is made up of wide expanses of golden sand, intimate rocky coves, isolated dunes and large desert areas which are dramatically offset by lush woods of junipers, strawberry trees, Spanish broom and mastic trees falling sheer to the sea. A chequerboard of lush fields and plains, the coastline of Medio Campidano is also known as Green Coast. The two provincial capitals, Sanluri and Villacidro, are small villages where history and nature merge in pleasant harmony while offering tourists breathtaking natural settings.

The different municipalities belonging to the province of Medio Campidano are scattered with plenty of accommodation options, such as 3-star guesthouses and 4-star hotels situated both along the coastline and in the hinterland. Those looking for relaxing holidays in close touch with nature can stay at comfortable hotels situated in Villacidro, which make the ideal base for discovering the plateau of Oridda and Mount Linas, while hotels situated in Sanluri's old town give tourists the possibility to reach the main monuments and churches of the ancient village in a very short time. Not to be missed are budget hotels situated both near the mountains and by the sea, as well as intimate bed and breakfasts and charming holiday farms which provide comfortable accommodation a short distance from the most important tourist highlights.

The lovers of history flocking to Medio Campidano should visit Sanluri, which cherishes the only medieval fortress in Sardinia. The Castle Giudicale Villasanta, which was erected between the XII and the XVI century, is situated just in the heart of Sanluri and hosts  “Duca D’Aosta”  Museum of the Risorgimento, the latter cherishing precious collections of memorabilia, furniture and paintings dating back to the 19th and early 20th century.
The surrounding countrysides too are scattered with impressive medieval monuments, such as Romanesque and Gothic churches and sanctuaries surrounded by lush natural landscapes. Among the most famous ones are the Church of St. Maria de is Acquas in Sardara, the Church of St. Severa in Gonnosfanadiga and the Sanctuary of St. Marina in Villanovaforru.
The hilly landscapes of Marmilla cherish the most important archaeological sites in Sardinia; targeted excursions across the footpaths of Marmilla give visitors the possibility to discover the Nuraghic Complex of Barumini, which has recently been appointed UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Sacred Well of St. Anastasia, the Roman Spas of Sardara, the so-called Tomb of the Giants in Siddi and the Phoenician-Punic settlement of Neapolis in Guspini.
Not to be missed is the picturesque village of Villacidro, which was repeatedly celebrated by local writer Giuseppe Dessì in his “Paese d’Ombre”, “San Silvano” and further romances. The fairy-tale settings of the thick wood of Villacidro host the 30-metre-high Waterfall of Sa Spendula, an outstanding waterway overlooking the stream Coxina. A short distance from Villacidro is the Park of St. Sisinnio, which is fully carpeted with ancient olive groves, and Lake Rio Leni, which offers the lovers of water sports the possibility to take part in challenging fishing competitions and in an important international Triathlon competition which takes place in June.
The most fascinating stretches of coastline are Piscinas and Scivu, which host some of the highest dunes in Europe where Carretta carretta sea turtles lay their eggs during the nights of June and July. Further south, the promontory of Capo Pecora gazes across Medio Campidano's compelling beaches from on high, and is fully scattered with outstanding fossils which bear witness to the millenary history of this mysterious land.
Not to be missed are Medio Campidano's excellent specialities. The main saffron grower in Italy, its lush fields are fully carpeted with purple saffron flowers, while local restaurants and folk festivals give tourists the possibility to taste  original saffron-based meat, pasta and desserts.
