Situated just in the heart of the Marches, this small village tops the hills situated few kilometres far from Ancona and still retains the original aspect of a sanctuary.
A traditional Mecca for pilgrims from all over the world, its impressive sanctuary hosts the Holy House, the house where Maria is said to have lived in Nazareth and the Annunciation to have taken place.

This sanctuary attracts thousands of pilgrims every year, who stay at comfortable three- and four-star hotels in Loreto. There are also many cheap guesthouses which allow tourists to visit the city without spending too much.

The walls which encircle the city date back to '500, the Age when the building of the sanctuary, commissioned by the bishop of Recanati, Nicolò delle Aste, came to an end. The city develops around the impressive sanctuary which dominates the surrounding hills south of Ancona and offers guests an outstanding panorama over both the sea and the mountains.
The Basilica, which cherishes the Holy House, is Loreto's main attraction and a traditional tourist mecca. The building combines late-Gothic and Renaissance style and is provided with a Latin-cross plan and an impressive dome by Giuliano da Sangallo. Under the impressive dome is the Holy House, which is protected by a marble structure designed by Bramante. Inside the walls of the Holy House is the statue of the Black Madonna, also called Vergine Lauretana or Madonna di Loreto. The numerous works of art cherished by the Basilica, as well as the Picture Gallery Museum, are other important attractions in Loreto.
