Visiting Locorotondo

Locorotondo is a charming village which gazes across the countryside from the top of the green hills of Itria Valley. It is named after the original morphology of the first rural settlement founded here around 1000 A.D., which was made up of small houses distributed concentrically around the top of the hill.

Those who want to spend their holidays in the ancient village can stay at guesthouses or small 3-star hotels which are situated just in the heart of the old town and enjoy utmost peace and tranquillity. The nearby lush countryside is punctuated with holiday farms hosted inside ancient countryhouses, while on the outskirts of the village are charming bed and breakfasts hosted inside local trulli.  The luxury accommodation facilities and 4-star hotels of the city centre are provided with modern services and facilities.

The cosy and intimate old town is made up of white lime houses featuring pointed roofs and is crossed by charming narrow streets which culminate around the so-called Chiesa Madre (Mother Church), an impressive building erected between 1790 and 1825 over the ruins of the ancient Medieval church which once dominated the village. Characterized by a sober style although scattered with precious sculptures and decorations, its plain outer structure is dramatically offset by the Baroque magnificence of the inner furnishings, such as the sumptuous high altar and further altars. The outstanding frescos, paintings, wooden statues and reliquiaries cherished by the church and its sacristy date back to the XVII and XVIII century.
Further outstanding churches follow one another along the streets of the ancient village. Not to be missed are the Medieval Church of the Hospital, the Church of Madonna della Catena, built over ancient caves which are now open to the general public, St. Nicola, a plain building characterized by a peculiar circular roof which belonged to the ancient urban settlement, Annunziata, which incorporates an impressive building erected in 1560 which is now the venue for interesting exhibitions and cultural events, and Madonna della Greca, which can be reached through the most ancient streets of the city centre which connect the Chiesa Madre with this enchanting religious building dating back to 1300.
Apart from its fascinating old town, Locorotondo also boasts lush countrysides which are punctuated with charming complexes of trulli and fully carpeted with lush vines and olive groves.
