A provincial capital of Liguria and the second largest city of the region, La Spezia overlooks the homonymous gulf and is backed by lush green hills which contribute to give the city utmost fascination. The beautiful indented coastline which connects Lerici with La Spezia and Porto Venere, which is dotted with charming inlets and coves and quiet and intimate beaches, is also called the Gulf of the Poets, since it was a traditional gathering place for writers and poets, such as Shelley, Byron, Petrarca and Montale.
The ancient medieval old town was partially reconstructed after the Italian Navy had built an Arsenal in the 19th century, and after one of the largest commercial ports of the Mediterranean was built in the western area of the city.

Those spending their holidays in La Spezia will have the opportunity to start the tour of the old town visiting the Castle of St. Giorgio, a military building gazing across the city from on high which was erected in the XIII century and subsequently renovated. The inner rooms cherish the inestimable prehistoric finds unearthed during the extensive excavation works which took place in the territories of Lunigiana, as well as famous statues dating back to the Bronze and Iron Age.
The city centre is dominated by the Cathedral of Cristo Re dei Secoli, which commands Piazza Europa. The project was designed in 1975 by architect Adalberto Libera and foresaw a strange circular shape.
Not to be missed is the splendid Church of St. Maria Assunta, which was built in the XIII century just in the heart of the city. Its interior cherishes precious works of sacred art, such as the terracotta altar-piece depicting the incoronation of the Virgin by Andrea Della Robbia. Further sumptuous palaces are the former hotel Croce di Malta, a nineteenth-century building which once was the summer residence of the Savoia Family, and Palazzo delle Poste Centrali in Piazza Verdi, which was realized in the 30s and decorated with precious mosaics by the illustrious futurist artists Fillia and Enrico Prampolini. The city hosts plenty of interesting museums, such as the Centre of Modern and Contemporary Art, which contains a rich collection of works of art, and the Naval Technical Museum, which is situated next to the entrance gate to the Military Arsenal and gathers over 150 models of ships, interesting documents and curious memorabilia concerning the story of Italian Navy.
