The archipelago of the Aegadian Islands is made up of 5 islands, the larger Favignana, Marettimo and Levanzo and the smaller Formica and Marone, featuring some cliff formations only. Unlike most volcanic Sicilyn islands, the Aegadian Islands have a dolomitic origin and were appointed Natural Reserve in 1992. For administrative purpose the archipelago constitutes the butterfly-shaped Favignana, the largest and most densely populated island. The flat landscape of the eastern half of the island is dramatically offset by the rolling countryside of the western part, dominated by Mount Santa Caterina. It is topped by the Santa Caterina Fort, originally established by the Normans on Arab fortifications and susequently restored by the Spanish in the 17th century.
The island is famous all over the world for its tuna fisheries, among which the Florio one, situated a short distance from the Harbour. Like the other islands of the archipelago, Favignana boasts a crystal-clear sea populated by an outstanding fauna and flora halfway between the Tyrrhenian and the Mediterranean Sea.

The ancient Greek "Sacred Island", Marettimo, the second largest island, is the leftmost and most mysterious of the Aegadian Islands. The highest point is situated 600 metres above sea level and offers tourists the possibility to make outstanding excursions to discover its green woods and blue water. Levanzo, the smallest of the three main islands, features peculiar geologic patterns and a wide array of caves. Among these, the most famous is the Grotta del Genovese (Cave of the Genoese), featuring cave paintings dating back to prehistory (over 10 thousand years ago).
