Imperia, a provincial capital of Liguria which overlooks the western coastline, the so-called Riviera di Ponente or Riviera of the Flowers, is an appreciated tourist resort featuring compelling beaches and mild climate. It is situated few kilometres far from the French border and the alluring coastal resorts of the French Riviera.
Imperia was founded in 1923 and originated from the merging of eleven small municipalities. The two largest resorts, Oneglia to the east and Porto Maurizio to the west, dominate the city's profile, the latter cherishing a small tourist harbour which in summer  hosts numerous boats. These thriving coastal resorts overlooking the Ligurian Sea are connected by Viale Matteotti, a  charming stretch of the Aurelia route which flanks the coast.

Both Oneglia and Porto Maurizio gather comfortable hotels overlooking the sea, such as panoramic 3-star guesthouses and luxury 4-star hotels situated on the top of the local promontory, the latter offering breathtaking views over the beguiling Ligurian Sea, which was repeatedly awarded the blue flag recognition for its crystal-clear waters and excellent tourist services and facilities. Budget hotels and cheap inns situated along Oneglia's coastline are the ideal accommodation facilities for families with children flocking to the so-called Riviera of the Flowers in spring or autumn, while the old towns of both resorts gather intimate bed and breakfasts which are hosted inside charming houses.

Porto Maurizio gathers Imperia's major artistic and tourist sights. Its centre rises on the top of the panoramic promontory  and is characterized by narrow streets and mysterious nooks and crannies, the so-called caruggi and creuze, which lead to sumptuous palaces, ancient houses and impressive entrance gates made of blackrock. The Neoclassical Cathedral of St. Maurizio, which was built in the eighteenth century, is the most important religious building of the city. Walking down the old town, it is possible to reach the eighteenth-century Oratory of St. Pietro and the charming Portico of St. Chiara. The small square situated in front of the Oratory  offers visitors the possibility to enjoy breathtaking views over the  underlying translucent sea and the green hills of the hinterland, the latter being carpeted with ancient olive groves.
The promontory of Porto Maurizio is dramatically offset by the modern centre of Oneglia, the main residential area of the city, which is scattered with glamorous shops and modern services and facilities The environs too provide scenic and relaxing locations for excursions along the coast or in the steep hills behind. Not to be missed is Montegrazie, a lush green hill which hosts the Romanesque Sanctuary of Nostra Signora delle Grazie, an enchanting church surrounded by lush olive groves. Few kilometres from it is Moltedo, whose parish church cherishes two inestimable Baroque paintings, the Holy Family by Anton Van Dyck and St. Isidoro by Gregorio De Ferrari. Those flocking to Imperia on the occasion of Christmas holidays will have the opportunity to visit the nearby hamlet of Sant’Agata, an ancient village which arranges one of the most appreciated cribs of the region.
