Imola, situated in the province of Bologna, is traditionally considered the western access to the historic Romagna region which was later annexed to Emilia. The city boasts a long Roman history, the remains of which are still redolent in the town layout and the so-called “canale dei mulini” (canal of the mills), an ancient aqueduct which surrounded the city and continued up to Ravenna which was reopened in 1200 for the grinding of cereals and for other economic activities.

Every year, the Municipal Theatre stages “Corto Imola Festival”, an important film and short film festival. 4 Kilometres far from the city centre, where the main hotels in Imola are situated, is the Observatory, which organizes absorbing shows and exhibitions all year round.
As far as sport is concerned, Imola is famous all over the world for its circuit named after Dino and Enzo Ferrari. The passion for motor vehicles, which characterizes the whole of Emilia-Romagna, finds its main expression in Imola. Before the beginning of modernization works, the circuit hosted the world championship of Fomula One.
Even traditional cooking attracts large numbers of visitors. The wines produced in this region, such as Sangiovese, Albana, Trebbiano and DOC Colli di Imola, are exported all over the world, and so are other excellent wines, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Pignoletto. The city boasts delicious specialities; in autumn a food festival called "Baccanale" lasts two weeks.
