Visiting Grottaglie
Grottaglie, the so-called city of caves, is an Apulian municipality situated in the province of Taranto north of the Salentine Peninsula. The city centre, a whole rock of tuff, tops the sweet hill of Monte Pizzuto which in 2005 was added to the protected area of the Regional Park of the Ravines.
Every year, thousands of tourists flock to 3-star guesthouses, the accommodation facilities of the old town and luxury 4-star hotels to visit archaeological and historical sites, local workshops and the natural peculiarities which attract visitors from all over the world. Those who stay at a holiday farm or at hotels provided with restaurant will have the opportunity to taste excellent local staples, such as eating grapes and olive oil.
Local crafts is one of the main attractions for tourists flocking to Grottaglie: not to be missed is the ceramic industry, which employs almost 55 workshops thanks to the abundance of clay and an ancient tradition. Nowadays the manufacture of majolicaware concentrates in the so-called ceramic district and is supervised by an artistic institute aimed at training students. Furthermore, the halls of Episcopio Castle host the Ceramic Museum, which displays artefacts which have been manufactured from the VIII century B.C. up to present days.
The impressive architecture of the Castle, an ancient medieval fortress dating back to the end of 1400, is very different from the contemporary layout of the Chiesa Matrice, which commands Piazza Margherita and the whole of the ancient village with its imposing limestone facade. The hotels situated in the old town are situated a short distance from beautiful aristocratic residences, the Sanctuary of St. Francis de Geronimo, the patron saint of Grottaglie, and the sixteenth-century Church of Carmine and nearby Monastery, which hosts a famous stone crib sculptured by Stefano da Putignano in 1530. Not to be missed is the landscape surrounding Grottaglie, which is scattered with caves, small waterfalls and natural quarries, such as the Fantiano ones, which have recently been turned into an open-air theatre which every July hosts Musica Mundi International Festival, dedicated to both ethnic and folk music.
