Frosinone, which was founded on the the top of the hill overlooking Sacco valley and then extended up to the underlying plain, is a very old resort which has been settled since the Palaeolithic. Originary bearing the name of Frusna, it later turned into the Latin Frùsino and was one of the main settlements of the Hernici and Voscian peoples, as evidenced by the necropoles dating back to the VI and V century BC which were discovered in the upper part of the city.

The old town retains only a few evidences dating back to the centuries when Frosinone became a Roman colony and a church's possession up to of 1870. Most architectural buildings of the city were destroyed during World War II. The main finds which bear witness to the long history of Frusino are cherished by the Archaeological Museum of the city, while the modern city of Frosinone, the capital of Ciociaria, is a thriving industrial centre. Among the most important religious buildings are the Cathedral of St. Maria Assunta, embellished by its original Romanesque bell tower, and the eighteenth-century churches of St. Benedetto, St. Magno and Madonna della Neve, the latter being sumptuously decorated with outstanding XVI-century frescos.
