Visiting Chieti

Chieti, a provincial capital of Abruzzo, is a lively village rising on the top of a charming hill situated 330 metres above sea level. It is situated in a privileged position overlooking both the sea and the nearby peaks of Majella and Gran Sasso. Situated halfway between the sea and the mountains, Chieti features a mild climate both in summer and in winter, thus standing out as an appreciated holiday destination all year round.

The higher part of the city, which cherishes the ancient original core, is peppered with fascinating narrow streets, while the modern area develops along the northern valley. Both the old town and the new urban area are scattered with a remarkably wide array of accommodation options. Intimate bed and breakfasts and cheap guesthouses are situated a short distance from the old town, while both 3- and 4-star hotels rise a short distance from the city's major highlights.

Legend has it that Chieti was founded by Achilles some centuries before the advent of Rome, thus standing out as one of the most ancient cities of the Italian peninsula. Those interested in archaeology will have the opportunity to admire Chieti's extraordinary heritage gathering precious finds dating back to the Roman Age, when the city was the main economic centre of the region. Charming temples and spas, a theatre and an amphitheatre were unearthed during the last century, while further precious finds are cherished by the National Archaeological Museum of Abruzzo, one of the most important exhibitions in Italy, which is hosted inside the nineteenth-century Villa Frigerj and surrounded by the lush gardens of Chieti's Municipal Villa.
Corso Marrucino, the most important and lively arterial route of the city,  is flanked by the most important buildings and monuments, such as the Baroque Church of St. Domenico and the adjoining Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art, which contains precious paintings and frescos dating back to ‘400 and ‘500, the elegant Marrucino Theatre and the Church of St. Francesco della Scarpa, which was founded in 1239 over a pre-existing settlement and subsequently restored through the inclusion of more recent architectural patterns. Just behind this building is Chieti's main church, the Cathedral of St. Giustino, which was built in the XI century together with the adjoining Romanesque crypt and was subsequently restored in ‘300, when the impressive bell tower was built too.
On the occasion of Easter holidays, Chieti is one of the most privileged destinations for those interested in the oldest Procession of Good Friday in Italy, whose origins date back to the XVI century. In May, tourists flock to Chieti to attend the popular  Maggio Teatino, an amazing celebration dedicated to the patron saint, St. Giustino, which gathers outstanding shows and concerts, historical-medieval recollections, interesting exhibitions and absorbing cultural events. In July, on the occasion of the Settimana Mozartiana (Mozart Week), the lovers of classical music flock to Chieti to take part in amazing shows, concerts and cultural events dedicated to the  most famous Austrian composer.
