Visiting Castiglione della Pescaia

Castiglione della Pescaia is a charming seaside resort situated in southern Tuscany which overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea. The ancient medieval part of the city is situated on the promontory commanding the mouth of the river Bruna north-west of Grosseto and develops around the ancient castle, whereas the modern city snakes along the coast.

The Tyrrhenian Coast boasts a wide range of accommodation facilities and guesthouses which are able to suit even tourists' most demanding requirements. There are many 3-star hotels in Castiglione della Pescaia which offer special agreements with the nearby bathing establishments, as well as tailor-made services for both families and groups. To stay at a cheap hotel situated on the promontory or at one of the numerous holiday farms in Castiglione della Pescaia situated near the pinewood forest or other naturalistic areas gives visitors the possibility to make wonderful excursions enjoying the lush Mediterranenan scrub which covers the surrounding hills. The nearby glamorous resort of Punta Ala attracts elite tourists and provides accommodation in elegant 4-star hotels.

The coastline of Castiglione della Pescaia, which was awarded recognitions for its beaches, sea and standards of living, consists of the Western and the Eastern Beach, two sickle-shaped coastal stripes which rejoin in Punta Capezzolo. This wind-abraded coastline is among the most appreciated in Tuscany because of its shady pinewood forest encompassing the beach. The exclusive resort of Punta Ala is situated north and has recently hosted the shipyard of Luna Rossa (Red Moon). Tourists flock here year after year to enjoy the outstanding pinewood forests and the well-equipped bathing establishments this resort hosts.
Behind the pinewood forest of Castiglione della Pescaia, in the direction of Grosseto is the Regional Reserve of Diaccia Botrona, a marshy district characterized by a unique ecosystem which attracts the lovers of both nature and birdwatching. The eighteenth-century building which marks the entrance to the Reserve, known as Casa Ximenes or Casa Rossa (Red House), hosts a multimedia museum dedicated to the adjoining naturalistic area.
Another interesting building worthy of note is Tenuta della Badiola, built in the eighteenth century to become the game preserve of the Lorena family, which has recently been transformed into a luxury hotel and restaurant.
The old town of Castiglione della Pescaia still retains its medieval aspect. The ancient fourteenth-century castle dominates the city and the surrounding narrow streets host buildings dating back to the XV and XVI century, such as the Aragonese Fortress and the Church of St. John the Baptist, which cherishes the mortal remains of Saint Guglielmo d'Aquitania. The cellars, wine bars and inns situated in the city centre offer visitors the possibility to taste a wide selection of fine wines, since Castiglione della Pescaia is situated halfway between three wine routes: Monteregio, Maremma hills and Montecucco. Wine is often served with fresh fish cooked according to traditional recipes.
