Visiting Castelvetro

Castelvetro nestles amidst Modena's gentle hills and is surrounded by a fascinating, unspoiled landscape. It strives to promote quality tourism while making the most of its traditions and offering visitors high-quality services.

The city boasts a wide variety of accommodation facilities ranging from four-star hotels to cheap guesthouses. Both the old town and the surrounding area host several 3-star hotels and further accommodation facilities which make the traditional warm hospitality from Romagna famous all over the world.

Settled since the Palaeolithic, Castelvetro was a strategic point for the Roman army. The current layout of the city develops around the original Roman distribution of the streets. Most buildings and monuments in Castelvetro, easily accessible on foot from the hotels situated in the city centre, date back to the Middle Ages. Piazza Roma, characterized by its black and white flooring similar to a chessboard, makes the ideal base for visiting the old town. Not to be missed are the two towers, the ancient Clock Tower, the symbol of the town, and the Renaissance Tower of the Prisoners. The Castle of Castelvetro, built before the year 1000, hosted Torquato Tasso in 1565; a whole room situated on the first floor is named after him and interesting paintings portray important moments of his life.
Castelvetro celebrates the sixteenth century, the Age during which the town was a rich and powerful centre, with an historical parade and fascinating shows in Renaissance costumes which take place along the streets of the city centre. The celebrations, which take place on alternate years, culminate in the fascinating human draughts match.
The quality of the services provided by the hotels and guesthouses in Castelvetro, the wine bars which are famous for the production of Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro D.O.C., the renowned cooking from Emilia and the beauty of this area gave Castelvetro the prestigious Italian Touring Club Award “Bandiera arancione” (Orange flag), which bears witness to the high quality of the tourist services it provides.
