Visiting Carbonia-Iglesias

The new province of Carbonia-Iglesias, which is situated on the south-eastern edge of Sardinia, is the smallest provincial capital of the region. Its territory also comprises the two islands of San Pietro and Sant’Antioco, which are connected with Sardinia through a long bridge and an artifical isthmus. Its rocky coastline, wild hinterland and great archaeological and historic-artistic heritage make the province of Carbonia-Iglesias one of the most appreciated holiday destinations in the region.

Carbonia Iglesias gathers a remarkably wide array of accommodation facilities ranging from luxury 4-star hotels and comfortable 3-star guesthouses overlooking the coast to intimate budget hotels and cheap guesthouses. Not to be missed are the charming holiday farms surrounded by Sardinia's lush vegetation and thick woods and the comfortable hotels situated a short distance from the most important archaeological sites of the island.

Among the most appreciated tourist destinations are Sulcis Park and Mount Linas, the latter being an impressive granite wall which gazes across Iglesias's countryside from on high. A short distance from it is the Forest of Marganai, an unspoiled protected area populated by rare species of animals and plants. A short distance from Carbonia, Mount Sirai hosts one of the most important archaeological sites of the island, where a large Phoenician-Punic settlement was unearthed during extensive excavation works.
Not to be missed are the charming old towns of the surrounding small villages and of the largest centres of the province, Carbonia and Iglesias. The most representative peculiarities of these centres are their impressive granite buildings and monuments and their important mining basins, which once were the most important economic resource of the whole area. Zinc, silver and coal quarries, caves and mines are a traditional holiday destination for those flocking to this Sardinian province. Iglesias's city centre also hosts the Minerary Museum, which displays one of the largest national collections of minerals and rocks, and the Museum of Minerary Art, the latter gathering pictures, materials and tools which remind of the important minerary activities of the province.
