Visiting Carbonia

Carbonia, a provincial capital of Sardinia together with the nearby Iglesias, is a small village situated in the south-western corner of the island. The flat landscape of the Sardinian plain is dramatically offset by spectacular hills, such as Mount Sirai and Mount San Michele Arenas, which offer breathtaking views over the historic region of Sulcis. The name of the city draws inspiration from the minerary tradition of the surrounding area, which has hosted plenty of coal mines since the early 20th century.

Carbonia boasts a remarkably wide array of accommodation options which are able to suit the requirements of those flocking here to admire impressive archaeological sites. It gathers comfortable 3-star guesthouses situated in the old town, luxury 4-star hotels and intimate bed and breakfasts. Not to be missed are the charming holiday farms situated on the slopes of Mount Sirai, which give visitors the possibility to reach the major archaeological sites in a very short time.

Carbonia's old town develops around the central Piazza Roma, which is dominated by the Church of St. Ponziano, the city's most representative sacred building. Both the church and the adjoining bell tower were built between 1938 and 1939 in the neo-Romanesque style and, like most buildings in Carbonia, are largerly built of granite and trachyte. The square is also home to the Civic Tower, the Central Theatre and the Town Hall, which were all realized in the late 30s in the rationalist style. Walking across Parco Sulcis, visitors will have the opportunity to admire the enchanting Villa Sulcis, the seat of the city's Archaeological Museum. Not to be missed is the Large Serbariu Mine, which was the most important mine up to the 70s and is now the seat of the Museum of Coal.
Take a car trip to Mount Sirai, situated on the north-western outskirts of Carbonia,  where extensive excavations unearthed the remains of an ancient Phoenician-Punic settlement. Note the outstanding acropolis scattered with the remains of impressive fortifications, houses and roads, and the huge necropolis gathering tufa tombs and the so-called tophet, a location where ancient settlers sacrificed children and animals, as evidenced by the unearthed urns containing bones and ornaments. The surrounding hills are peppered with interesting archaeological sites too.
