Visiting Cagliari
Cagliari, the regional capital of Sardinia, overlooks the homonymous gulf situated on the southern coast of the island. The oldest core of the city, the so-called Castello, rises on the top of a sweet hill around which Cagliari's modern area is currently developing. Settled since the V century BC, the city experienced glorious vicissitudes and underwent extensive urban interventions which contributed to create its inestimable artistic heritage. Phoenician necropolises, Roman villas and amphitheatres, the impressive fortress built by the Pisans in '200 in the high Castello district, the Aragonese village of Bonaria and Palazzo Reale, where the Savoy Dinasty lived between '700 and ‘800, make the city a fascinating holiday destination.
Easily accessible by both sea, thanks to its modern and busy port, and plane, through the national and international flights arranged by Elmas Airport, Cagliari is one of the most appreciated holiday destinations in the world, and offers those interested in its natural, historic and artistic beauties and compelling sea plenty of targeted services and facilities.
3-star guesthouses and 4-star hotels offer guests the possibility to enjoy utmost comfort and elegance both in the city centre and along the coast. The districts situated around the harbour are scattered with cheap inns and bed and breakfasts, while the old town hosts plenty of budget hotels.
Ancient settlements and contemporary districts merge in pleasant harmony. Not to be missed are Sant’Elia Districts and the surrounding Piazza Gilla, where acclaimed architects designed new areas and spaces. Castello, the ancient quarter dominated by the Pisan fortress, leads to the impressive St. Remy Bulwark, the latter offering magnificent views over the city and surrounding countryside. The impressive city walls lead to the Cathedral, situated just in the heart of Piazza Palazzo, while the narrow streets of the city centre lead to Piazza Indipendenza, which is dominated by the fourteenth-century Tower of St. Pancrazio and the National Archaelogical Museum. The nuraghic items are the most interesting in the collection, especially the bronze votive statuettes.
At the foot of Castello lies Villanova quarter, which hosts the Municipal Art Gallery and the oldest and most interesting churches of the city, such as St. Giacomo, St. Domenico, which is provided with a beautiful late Gothic cloister, and the ancient church of St. Saturnino, which dates back to the V century AD. The Stampace District is scattered with small workshops selling local items and original souvenirs. It also hosts the Botanical Garden, the Roman amphitheatre and the Roman Villa Tigellio.
Marina Quarter, which develops just in front of Cagliari's port, expanded from the old town and was once inhabited by merchants and fishermen. Besides impressive monuments and squares and the famous Lyric Theatre, it also hosts the beautiful Poetto Beach, which in summer hosts absorbing shows and events and interesting cultural activities.
