Visiting Biella

Situated in the foothill of the Alps, Biella rises 400 metres above sea level in the northwestern side of Piedmont, just across the boundary with Valle d'Aosta. A provincial capital since 1992, Biella is subdivided into two distinct centres, Biella Piano, a flat area overlooking the stream Cervo, and Biella Piazzo, situated on the top of a panoramic hill. The so-called area of Chiavazza has recently been added. An important textile centre dealing with wool production, Biella attracts both tourists and business travellers, who flock here to enjoy outstanding historical and artistic beauties and alluring natural settings.

Biella Piano gathers a remarkably wide array of accommodation options, such as budget hotels situated in the city centre, intimate bed and breakfasts and cheap family-run guesthouses. Those looking for utmost comfort can stay at 3-star guesthouses and luxury 4-star hotels featuring modern services and facilities.

Biella Piano gathers the city's major highlights. The heart of Biella Piano is Piazza Duomo, a wide square commanded by the imposing Cathedral, which was built in the XV century over a  pre-existing religious builiding dating back to the X century. It features an impressive Gothic entrance gate and frescoed interiors dating back to the ‘400 - ‘500.
Not to be missed is the adjoining Baptistry, which still retains the original structure dating back to the X – XI century, featuring a central plan, an impressive dome and 4 apses decorated with arched niches. A short distance from it is the Romanesque bell tower which once belonged to the former church of St. Stefano.
Mario Balocco Permanent Museum of the Alpine Troops cherishes documents, memorabilia and further interesting finds dating back to World War I. Not to be missed is  Biella's Museum of the Territory too.
Biella Piazzo rises on the top of the gentle hill situated west, and is easily accessible through a dedicated cableway. This quiet area of the city, which boasts breathtaking views over the surrounding landscape, develops along Corso Piazzo south and via Avogardo north, which are connected through Piazza Cisterna. Biella Piazzo cherishes several buildings dating back to ‘400 - ‘600, such as Palazzo Cisterna, which features an enchanting sixteenth-century facade, and the medieval Casa Teccio, which is embellished by fine Renaissance ornaments.
Biella boasts a strong food and wine tradition which combines genuine local staples with elaborate dishes which draw inspiration from both the recipes of the Savoy Court and French flavours. Among the most famous regional specialities are Bagna Cauda (a warm mix of olive oil, anchovies and garlic into which raw vegetables are dipped) and Barolo, Barbera and Dolcetto d’Alba wines.
