Visiting Benevento
Benevento and the homonymouys province are the most appreciated holiday destinations in Campania. Surrounded by lush green hills, Benevento is dominated by Taburno Camposauro, which is also known as “the sleeping woman of the Sannio”, since its profile reminds of the body of a lying woman. Legend has it that Benevento is the city of witches; the town has centuries-old associations with pagan worship, and a liqueur called Strega (Witch) is made here.
Benevento's city centre rises on the top of a charming hill surrounded by the rivers Sabato and Calore. Most accommodation facilities are situated in this area, such as comfortable 3-star guesthouses and elegant 4-star hotels. The budget hotels situated along Corso Dante, the city's major arterial route, and intimate bed and breakfasts offers guests the possibility to spend comfortable holidays here at reasonable prices.
The city's higher point is dominated by Rocca dei Rettori, an impressive castle erected by the Lombards over a pre-existing structure which is now the seat of the Province of Benevento and the Sannio Museum, which contains artifacts from the region of Samnium, the Apennine area which was once populated by the Samnites.
The wide avenues of Corso Dante and Corso Garibaldi lead to the city's major squares, while narrow side streets give tourists the possibility to reach Benevento's historical quarters, such as the medieval Piano di Corte and Triggio. Walking along Corso Garibaldi east of the old town it is possible to reach the city's most modern area. Piazza IV Novembre leads to the Municipal Villa, which is idyllically situated just in the heart of the Atlantici district, which also hosts Nicola Calandra theatre-auditorium.
Among Benevento's most important monuments and buildings is the Arch of Trajan, which was erected in 113 AD across the old road which connected Benevento with Brindisi in honour of the Roman Emperor, and the Roman Theatre, which was built during Hadrian's reign, in 126 AD. The Church of St. Sofia, situated just in the heart of Piazza Matteotti, dates back to the Lombard Age. A short distance from it is the Duomo, which was erected in 780 and subsequently enriched with the inclusion of a sculptured Romanesque facade and a Gothic bell tower. Not to be missed are the XII-century bronze gate and the frescos of the Crypt.
Since 1992, Hortus Conclusus, the garden of the medieval Dominican monastery, has hosted the artworks of Mimmo Paladino, an acclaimed artist from Benevento who has become famous all over the world as one of the main representatives of Transavantguard.
