A provincial capital of Piedmont situated just in the heart of the valley of the river Tanàro, Asti is internationally associated with sweet spumante (sparkling) wine, and is at the centre of Italy's most prestigious wine region. Besides being an important agricultural and commercial centre, it is also a tranquil and noble city of medieval towers, elegant churches and warm red roofs.

Situated just across the boundary with Monferrato, Asti gathers a remarkably wide array of accommodation options which are able to suit even visitors' most demanding requirements. The oldest core of the city rises on the top of a gentle hill situated north, and it features an elliptic plan and a medieval town layout made up of narrow streets and endless nooks and crannies. It gathers outstanding historic evidences, such as the remains of the city walls and of two castles, plenty of brick buildings dating back to the XII-XV century, impressive medieval towers and further attractions.
Beyond this district lies the triangular Piazza Alfieri, which leads to the homonymous Corso Alfieri, Asti's main gathering place, which runs the entire lenght of the old city centre. At its eastern end stands Torre dei Comentini, the 18th-century Palazzo Di Bellino, the seat of the Museum of the Risorgimento and of the Picture Gallery, Torre De Regibus, Palazzo Alfieri, the native house of  the local poet and dramatist Vittorio Alfieri which is now the seat of Alfieri Study Centre and the related museum, and the Augustan Torre Romana, which was subsequenlty restored in the XI-XII century.
A short distance is the Romanesque-Gothic Asti's Cathedral, which features three decorated entrance gates, an enchanting Gothic side prothyrum and a monumental bell tower.
The nearby Via Natta, which is situated just behind the Cathedral, leads to the so-called “Recinto dei nobili”, which gathers some medieval residences dating back to the XIII-XV century.  Among the chief medieval monuments is the Baptistry of St. Pietro, which was built in the XII century with an octogonal plan, the current seat of interesting exhibitions and displays, and the Romanesque-Gothic Church of St. Secondo, which was erected between the XIII and XV century.
Famous all over the world for its wines and sparkling wines, Asti welcomes large numbers of tourists in the surrounding countryside, which is scattered with wine industries and holiday farms which offer them the possibility to  taste local staples and traditional specialities from Asti. The city also stages absorbing food and wine festivals, such as “Douja d’or”, the wine fair which takes place in September, and the Festival of Asti's Traditional Cooking, which is normally held between September and October.
Not to be missed is the traditional Palio d’Asti, the horse race which has been held towards the end of September since 1275, which features outrageous horsemanship and medieval pageantry.
