Visiting Andria

Andria, a provincial capital of Apulia together with Barletta and Trani, is a large centre situated almost 10 kilometres far from the Adriatic Coast. Part of its territory is included in the National Park of the Alta Murgia, a protected natural oasis gathering fascinating caves, ancient farms and rare species of wild animals and plants.

Those interested in staying at comfortable accommodation facilities situated in the old town or on the top of the nearby plateau of the Murge will have the opportunity to take advantage of well-equipped 3-star guesthouses and welcoming 4-star hotels. Not to be missed are charming holiday farms surrounded by breathtaking natural scenaries, intimate bed and breakfasts hosted inside sumptuous palaces and plenty of comfortable budget hotels.

The most representative landmark of Andria and the whole Apulia is Castel del Monte, which was erected over the remains of an ancient Benedictine abbey commissioned by Frederick II of Swabia in the XIII-century. The well-preserved octagonal edifice is one of the major highlights of the surrounding area, and its solemn structure and fairy-tale atmosphere have always fueled mysterious legends which make it even more  fascinating.
Andria's old town is scattered with precious monuments, narrow streets and fascinating small squares. The central Piazza Vittorio Emanuele hosts the most representative monuments, that is to say the impressive Ducal Palace, the Bishop's Palace, which cherishes outstanding works of art,  the Duomo dedicated to the Assunta, which was built in the Romanesque style but subsequently underwent total restoration, the bell tower, which dates back to 1188, and the nearby Church of St. Francesco, which features an impressive entrance gate and Baroque campanile.
Not to be missed are the church of St. Agostino, commissioned in ‘200 by the Knights Templar, which features a sumptuous pointed entrance gate and impressive Baroque stuccos, and the Church of St. Maria dei Miracoli, a 16th-century building which was erected over the remains of an ancient cave situated 2 kilometres far from Andria. It cherishes a IX-century Byzantine icon depicting the Madonna and Child, precious cycles of frescos dating back to ‘500 and an outstanding sculptured wooden ceiling.
