The Guasco Hill is dominated by the monumental Cathedral of St. Ciriaco, one of the most important medieval churches in the Marches. It was erected in the XI-century in the Romanesque style, although it also features Byzantine and Gothic patterns. The inner crypt cherishes impressive remains of ancient buildings, such as a 3rd-century temple and an early Christian church, while the interior is embellished by a monumental 18th-century altar by Vanvitelli.
Walking down Via Giovanni XXIII it is possible to reach the 13th-century Palazzo del Senato and the nearby National Museum of the Marches, the latter cherishing rich collections of interesting items and memorabilia, precious archaeological finds and outstanding works of ancient art.
Walking along the harbour, it is possible to reach Piazza della Repubblica, a thriving gathering place which in turn leads to Corso Garibaldi, the city's major arterial route. Heading to Ancona's modern part along Viale della Vittoria, visitors will have the opportunity to reach the so-called Passetto and its monumental staircase leading to the beach.
Heading to Via della Loggia, it is possible to reach Palazzo Giovannelli Benincasa and the so-called Loggia dei Mercanti (Merchants' Exchange), enchanting Gothic buildings dating back to the first half of the 15th-century, and the Romanesque church of St. Maria della Piazza. The nearby Piazza del Plebiscito is dominated by Palazzo del Governo, which was designed by Francesco di Giorgio Martini in the 15th century, and the Church of St. Domenico, an 18th-century church cherishing outstanding works of art, among which the Crucifixion by Titian and the Annunciation by Guercino. Via Pizzecolli leads to Palazzo Bosdari, the seat of the Civic Picture Gallery and Ancona's Gallery of Modern Art. At the end of the street are the beautiful Church of St. Francesco delle Scale, the 13th-century Palazzo degli Anziani, the 16th-century Palazzo Ferretti, which is now the seat of the National Museum, and the Church of Gesù, which boasts an enchanting facade designed by Vanvitelli.
Vanvitelli, the most important precursor of Neoclassicism, also designed the so-called Lazzaretto or Mole Vanvitelliana, a pentagonal building which was erected over an artificial islet and then connected with the mainland through a small bridge. This impressive building is now the venue for important art exhibitions and related events.
