Piazza dei Priori is flanked by Piazza San Giovanni, that is commanded by the Duomo and its Baptistry, that were both built according to the canons of the Romanesque-Pisan style, and contain precious artworks of great value.
Volterra cherishes two prestigious art collections of great value, that are hosted inside the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art and the Picture Gallery respectively. The Picture Gallery contains precious masterpieces by Giovanni Pisano, Taddeo di Bartolo, Domenico Ghirlandaio and Luca Signorelli. The most important piece of the exhibition is the Deposition by Rosso Fiorentino, that is one of the most spectacular artworks in Italy.
Volterra is also home to the interesting Etrusco Guarnaccii Museum. It hosts the most important Etruscan collection in Italy, and gathers precious remains dating back to the period comprised between the Neolithic Age and the Late Hellenistic Era. Volterra's Fortress is the city's most representative landmark. Its imposing walls and high bulwarks still retain the Renaissance aspect commissioned by Lorenzo il Magnifico in 1472. Its imposing structures have been home to a top security prison for several years now.
