Vizzini, a small municipality situated in the province of Catania, is a city of ancient origins whose precious finds dating back to the Bronze Age and the Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Arab dominations bear witness to the glorious vicissitudes it experienced. Vizzini is a traditional mecca for cultural tourists too, since it is the native town of one of the most famous writers in Sicily, Giovanni Verga, who set most of his novels here.

The current centre of Vizzini is situated just in the heart of the city's expansion, which took place after the sixteenth century when it extended beyond its medieval walls up to the hills of Maddalena and Poggio. The earthquake which destroyed Val di Noto in 1693 damaged Vizzini's most ancient monuments too, such as the sumptuous Chiesa Madre dedicated to St. Gregorio Magno, whose current late-Baroque portal now replaces the original one. Even the XII-century Church St. Maria di Gesù, which is described inside “La Lupa” romance by Verga, was subsequently rebuilt in a Baroque style. The Basilica of St. John the Baptist, which is the city's most sumptuous church, is built in a Baroque style too. Not to be missed are the inner decorations of the Churches of St. Sebastiano and St. Lucia.
Those interested in discovering the places where Verga lived and worked should start their tour from Palazzo Verga, which bears an inscription dedicated to Vizzini's most illustrious citizen. Via Santa Maria dei Greci leads to the splendid Baroque Palazzo Trao, the house of Mastro Don Gesualdo in the homonymous romance. The same romance also quotes Palazzo Sganci, Palazzo Rubiera and Palazzo La Gurna, while “Cavalleria Rusticana” describes the small square of Santa Teresa and the homonymous church. The itinerary ends in Cunziria, a small nineteenth-century village situated north of Vizzini. Apart from the outstanding settings described in “Cavalleria Rusticana”, visitors will have the opportunity to admire the wild landscapes which surround the village, as well as its fascinating natural caves which have recently been turned into popular clubs.
