Villanova di Castenaso is a lovely hamlet of the province of Bologna that is situated a very short distance from the regional capital. It gave its name to a whole historic period, the so-called Villanovan Age, because a wide necropolis dating back to the first stage of the Iron Age was discovered here.

One of the city's most representative building is Villa Gozzadini, that was commissioned by the homonymous rich family from Bologn and then built in the XVI century in the nearby hamlet of Caselle. It is particularly important because the famous archaeologist Giovanni Gozzadini discovered a wide Villanovan necropolis here between 1853 and 1855. This large sepulchre, that gathers 193 tombs rich in funerary equipment and sculptured tombstones, dates back to the period comprised between the beginning of the VIII century and the end of the VII century B.C.
The villa is faced by the beautiful Parish Church of St. Ambrogio. Erected in ancient times, it has recently been totally remodelled and provided with a bell tower. The current architectural layout dates back to the second half of the XIX century.
Not to be missed are Villa Manaresi, the so-called “la Pederzana”, that is embellished by splendid frescoes and paintings and was commissioned by the rich timber merchant Marcantonio Pederzani in 1627, and the rectangular Oratory of St. Matteo della Pederzana, that is flanked by an impressive sail-shaped bell tower, that was erected in 1658.
The deep connection this small hamlet has with the Villanovan culture led to the inauguration of MUV - the Museum of the Villanovan Culture, that was opened in May 2009. This permanent exhibition displays precious remains coming from the excavations of Marano di Castenaso and the surrounding area, and it is hosted inside the majestic XI-century rural complex of Casa Sant'Anna.
