Visiting Villa d'Almè

Villa d’Almè,a pretty village surrounded by thick woods, ancient vines and green hills, is situated only 9 kilometres far from Bergamo, on the top of the sweet hills which encircle Val Brembana. The river Brembo laps against the lower part of the town, the so-called Ghiaie hamlet, where the first iron and steel industries and an important flax mill were founded in the nineteenth century.

Local hotels make the ideal base for visiting the surrounding landscapes, cultural attractions, elegant stately homes, ancient rural houses and important sacred buildings. Tourists can also stay at intimate guesthouses or comfortable holiday farms, which are situated a short distance from the old town and in the nearby hamlets of Bruntino, Campana, Botta and Sedrina.

The territory which surrounds Villa d’Almè is peppered with elegant stately homes, such as  Villa Locatelli-Milesi, which was realized in the late eighteenth century and still retains richly decorated halls which are open to the general public, and Villa del Ronco Alto, which was erected in the seventeenth century making use of some architectural elements belonging to other villas, which contributed to give it utmost profusion. Not to be missed are the rural houses and farmsteads which are idyllically set just in the heart of the glorious countryside, such as Ca’ dell’Ora and Ca’ del Piantù.
The most representative sacred buildings are the parish church of St. Faustino and Giovita, which was built at the beginning of the nineteenth century, and the oldest churches of St. Mauro, the seat of a traditional festival dedicated to St. Mauro which is held here on January 15, the Church of Addolorata and the seventeenth-century Church of Casella, which rises in the nearby hamlet of Ghiaie.
Villa d’Almè also gathers several public parks, such as Papa Giovanni XXIII Park, which develops along the municipal boundaries, and well-equipped sports centres. Most of the municipal territory is included in the Regional Natural Park of Bergamo Hills, which is crossed by plenty of challenging naturalistic itineraries.
