Visiting Vignola
Situated on the slopes of the Emilian Apennines, on the left bank of the river Panaro, the lovely village of Vignola is internationally renowned for its production of cherries, the most famous variety being the so-called “Mora di Vignola”.
A beautiful old town, tasty traditional specialities, lush parks, well-equipped cycle paths and fascinating naturalistic itineraries attract large numbers of tourists every year. They will have the opportunity to stay at comfortable hotels and guesthouses situated in the old town or at intimate holiday farms which are idyllically set halfway between Modena's glorious countryside and the first Alpine peaks.
Vignola's old town, which is scattered with outstanding monuments and works of art, offers tourists the possibility to visit splendid palaces and sacred buildings of great value. The symbol of the city is the Fortress, or Castle of Vignola. Erected before the X century to suit defensive purposes, it was turned into the residence of the Contrari Family in the fifteenth century and has subsequently hosted the Town Hall, the Library and the Cassa di Risparmio di Vignola since the nineteenth century. The castle of Vignola cherishes an inestimable collection of works of art which were commissioned by the Contrari Family and realized by illustrious fifteenth-century artists. Apart from its splendid frescoed walls and elegant inner spaces, not to missed are the panoramic balconies and the underground rooms, the latter being former cellars which are now the venue for amazing shows, concerts, events and theatrical representations.
In front of the Fortress is Palazzo Boncompagni, which was built in the XVI century and designed by Vignola's most illustrious citizen and architect, Jacopo Barozzi called Vignola. Apart from the harmonious outer structure and the famous spiral staircase leading to the upper floors, the palace is famous for the outstanding decorations which embellish walls and ceilings. Today, it is the venue for interesting art exhibitions and further events.
Both the lovers of nature and cultural tourists will appreciate the itinerary leading to Mount Belvedere, which gathers fascinating footpaths, mule tracks and scenic routes. Accessible both on foot, by bike and on horseback, the itinerary includes the Park of Sassi di Roccamalatina and its impressive stone towers and the nearby Romanesque Parish Church of Trebbio.
The lovers of outdoor activities will have the possibility to go for relaxing walks along the river Panaro, which connects Vignola with Modena, or to cycle across the ancient cycle path.
