The small municipality of Vigevano, which is situated 36 km far from Pavia, develops along the right banks of the river Ticino, just in the heart of north-eastern Lomellina.

The majestic Visconti – Sforza Castle dominates the beautiful Piazza Ducale, which was designed by Bramante and inspired Leonardo Da Vinci for the realization of some of the drawings of his Codes. It is one of the most representative examples of XV-century Lombard architecture, and one of the first Renaissance squares to be realized according to the canons of the Roman Forum. It is embellished by precious decorations, which were realized by local painters in the twentieth century, and its pavement is largely made of cobbles from the river Ticino.
Vigevano Castle is one of the largest fortresses in Europe. Its complex of buildings covers a total surface of 70 thousand square metres. The castle's imposing main body is complemented by a neo-Gothic entrance porch, an open gallery, a porticoed bridge, an ancient tower and some further architectural elements  which were added in '800. One of the most representative architectural patterns is Bramante Tower, a 75-metre-high structure featuring a peculiar shape. In the XVII century, the original dome was replaced by a Baroque one. Situated in the highest point of the city, it boasts breathtaking views over the whole underlying landscape.
Another important civil building of the old town is Palazzo San Severino, which was erected in 1492 according to the canons of the Renaissance architectural style. Two further important sacred buildings in Vigevano are the Church of St. Francesco and the Church of St. Pietro Martire.
