Visiting Vezzano Ligure
Vezzano Ligure is a small municipality situated in the province of La Spezia, just in the heart of Montemarcello-Magra Regional Natural Park. This lovely village rises on the top of a sweet hill overlooking Val di Magra and Val di Vara, in a privileged position which offers sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.
The principal economic activity and tourist attraction in Vezzano is the food industry, especially that linked with wine and olive oil; Vezzano Ligure's glorious countryside is scattered with vine-clad hills and ancient olive groves. Charming holiday farms and hotels provided with restaurant welcome large numbers of tourists flocking to Vezzano. The lovers of good cooking and food and wine itineraries who stay at intimate bed and breakfasts and guesthouses situated in the old town will have the opportunity to eat at excellent restaurants and wine shops serving tasty local staples.
Apart from food and wine attractions, Vezzano Ligure also boasts outstanding monuments and an inestimable naturalistic heritage.
Among the best-preserved remains belonging to the ancient settlement, which was founded in the X century and subsequently enlarged over the course of the three following centuries, are the ruins of the castle and the pentagonal XIII-century tower situated in the nearby hamlet of Vezzano Bassa, which was once connected with the impressive city walls which are now part of Palazzo Giustiniani. Few metres far from it are the Baroque church of St. Maria Assunta and St. Sebastiano, which dates back to 1616, and the XIII-century oratory of St. Michele, which underwent extensive renovation works before becoming a deconsecrated temple. The Romanesque church of St. Maria rises just in the heart of a lovely secluded position.
Vezzano's upper village develops around a central square and avenue featuring cobblestone paving. The whole area is dominated by sumptuous palaces dating back to the seventeenth and eigtheenth century. The square is crowned by the Renaissance church of Nostra Signora del Soccorso.
The lovers of medieval villages will have the opportunity to visit the nearby hamlet of Valeriano, which rises on the top of a panoramic hill and is dominated by the XVIII-century church of St. Apollinare. Not to be missed are Corongiola, which hosts the remains of the Parish Church of St. Prospero, the village of San Giorgio, which is easily accessible from Vezzano Bassa, and Prati, the latter being dominated by the sanctuary of Molinello, which was erected in 1500.
