Visiting Vernazza

Vernazza, an enchanting village of the province of La Spezia, develops just in the heart of a small and intimate bay of the Eastern Ligurian Riviera, and is surrounded by impressive cliffs and lush hills dotted with ancient vines. Vernazza is one of the so-called Cinque Terre, and is regarded to be one of the most beautiful villages in Italy since it is scattered with picturesque colourful houses that overlook the sea.

Hotels in Vernazza, that distribute in the heart of the old town, gather comfortable wide bedrooms provided with any comfort. The local guest houses make the ideal base for undertaking exciting excursions across the enchanting footpaths and trails of Cinque Terre. Vernazza's farm houses, that are surrounded by ancient vines and lush olive groves, are the ideal accommodation facilities for those interested in spending pleasant holidays here while enjoying the utmost rest and relax.

The western part of the city is dominated by the splendid Church of St. Margherita di Antiochia, the city's patron saint, that rises on the top of an impressive rock spur overlooking the sea. It has a nave and two aisles, and is embellished by an elegant Ligurian-Gothic facade. Its apse is flanked by an imposing 40-metre-high octagonal bell tower.
The eastern promontory, that overlooks the sea and Punta Mesco, is topped by the XII-century Doria Castle. This imposing quadrangular fortress is flanked by a high cylindrical watch-tower. The lower part of this huge lookout point is dominated by Belforte Tower, a quadrangular merloned bulwark that overlooks the city's small harbour.
A fascinating panoramic footpath leads to the lovely hamlet of Corniglia, the only village of Cinque Terre which has no access to the sea. Its major square is dominated by the fourteenth-century Church of St. Pietro. This elegant Ligurian-Gothic building is embellished by a splendid rose windown that was largely made of white marble from Carrara. Its interior cherishes a precious font dating back to the XII century.
Not to be missed along the coastline that extends between Vernazza and Monterosso is the famous Maemuna Cave, a 50-metre-deep gorge featuring enchanting shoals.
