Ventimiglia, an enchanting coastal resort of the province of Imperia, is idyllically set just in the heart of the Western Ligurian Riviera, and extends 8 kilometres far from the French border. Situated 42 kilometres far from the provincial capital, it is crossed by the Italian-French river Roia, which separates the ancient medieval village, that rises on the top of a sweet hill to the right of the river, from the modern part of the city, that extends along the left banks of the same river.

The city's most representative religious buildings are the Romanesque cathedral of St. Maria Assunta, that was erected in the XII century over the remains of a pre-existing pagan temple, and the Church of St. Michele Arcangelo (X century), whose crypt was largely made of Roman columns and milestones.
Porta Canarda, that was erected in the XII century and restored around the end of 1800 according to the projects of the English philanthropist Sir Thomas Hanbury, is a splendid example of defensive construction. This imposing medieval gate, that once provided access to the western part of the city, is surmounted by a high watch-tower and embellished by a double Gothic arch. Ventimiglia Alta's old town hosts the splendid Loggia del Parlamento, the so-called “Magazzino dell'Abbondanza”, a sumptuous public building dating back to the XV century. The monument's facade is embellished by two Gothic arches decorated with small suspended arches.
Not to be missed are the archaeological area of Albintimilium, that gathers an ancient spa complex and a huge Roman Theatre (II century A.D.) and develops along the mouth of the river Nervia, and Hanbury Botanical Gardens, that extend on the top of the promontory of Capo Mortola and gather more than 6000 plant specimens coming from all over the world.
