Visiting Turi
Turi, a small municipality of the province of Bari, develops on the top of the sweet hills which constitute the Murge plateau. Surrounded by flowering almond groves and cherry trees, it extends twenty kilometres far from the Adriatic Coast. This tiny rural centre plays a fundamental role in the local economy, and it is the main production district of the popular Ferrovia cherry variety, the so-called “red/gold cherry of Turi”.
Coated in Mediterranean shrub, hotels in Turi, which are provided with modern comforts and high-quality services and facilities, make the ideal base for visiting Apulia's major attractions and highlights. The local guest houses gather comfortable bedrooms which are all furnished with style according to ancient genuine traditions. Those interested in spending pleasant holidays here based on the utmost relax will have the possibility to stay at Turi's charming bed and breakfasts, which are sober accommodation facilities which are furnished according to the canons of Arte Povera.
Palazzo Marchesale Venusio, which once was an impressive medieval castle, is a typical example of the XVII-century architectural style. Today, it has been turned into a sumptuous Baroque building featuring large windows and huge balconies ornated with wrought-iron railings.
The so-called Chiesa Matrice, which is dedicated to St. Maria Assunta, is flanked by the city's highest religious tower, and it is surmounted by a bulb-shaped dome. The current structure of the church, which can be observed looking at its facade, was realized according to the canons of the Neoclassical architectural style; its interior cherishes precious sculptures and paitings of great value.
Not to be missed is Caracciolo Farm, which differs from the other fortified farms of the surrounding area since it is dominated by four edge towers which are surmounted by splendid Oriental-style semicircular domes.
The lovers of food and wine trade fairs won't miss the opportunity to take part in the popular “Festival of Ferrovia Cherry", which takes place every year in June. Apart from tasting this delicious fruit, visitors will have the opportunity to eat traditional local staples and drink excellent wines, such as the famous Primitivo Doc wine.
