Visiting Trevi
Trevi is a small municipality situated in the province of Perugia which is idyllically set south of Foligno. Its municipal territory extends from the valley up to the tops of mounts Brunette and Serano, which rise 1.400 metres above sea level. Trevi's fertile territory, which is covered with ancient olive groves, thick woods and lush meadows, is an important natural resource which attracts the lovers of nature and charming landscapes.
Apart from the outstanding natural beauties which attract large numbers of enthusiast excursionists, Trevi cherishes precious historical finds and is a traditional holiday destination for the lovers of food and wine itineraries. Those flocking to Trevi to spend pleasant holidays here will have the possibility to stay at the comfortable hotels of the old town or the charming guesthouses and holiday farms which are surrounded by fascinating rural landscapes.
The tour of the city could start from its original core, the so-called Pietrarossa area, which has been inhabitated since the prehistory and has been settled since the Roman Age. Here is an impressive Romanesque church dedicated to St. Maria di Pietrarossa. The current old town develops around the Duomo of St. Emiliano, which is named after Trevi's patron saint. In front of the Duomo is Palazzo Lucarini, which has been inhabitated by the Lucarini family since the XV century and is now the seat of the important Centre of Contemporary Art, which often organizes interesting exhibitions, congresses and events.
The lovely hamlet of Bovara, which extends halfway between the valley and the surrounding hills, cherishes precious historical finds. Worthy of note are the XII-century Benedictine Abbey and Umbria's most ancient olive grove, which is situated three hundred meters far from it. Legend has it that this tree was planted 1700 years ago and that it was the seat of the martyrdom of St.Emiliano, who was tied to the tree and beheaded in the VIII century.
An impressive square medieval building flanked by a high bell tower, which is similar to the one commanding Trevi's Piazza Martini, stands along the SS Flaminia in the lovely hamlet of Matigge, where most commercial activities and workshops are concentrated.
Those interested in making pleasant excursions across the thick surrounding woods while enjoying breathtaking views over the valley can head to the nearby hamlets of Coste or Manciano, the latter hosting the Romanesque Abbey of St. Stefano. Other impressive Romanesque buildings are to be found in Pigge.
