Visiting Trescore Balneario
Situated 15 kilometres far from Bergamo, Trescore Balneario is the administrative centre and most important resort of the low Val Cavallina. The tourist importance of this centre is linked to its thermal waters, whose therapeutic properties have been known since the Roman Age. Apart from being a lively spa town, Trescore Balneario stands out as a popular destination for cultural tourists, since it is scattered with outstanding monuments and a precious cycle of frescoes by Lorenzo Lotto, which attracts experts and researchers from all over the world.
A crowded tourist centre since situated along Tonale Statal Road which connects Bergamo with Bolzano, Trescore Balneario is an appreciated holiday destination. The city is scattered with well-groomed establishments and comfortable accommodation facilities, such as welcoming hotels belonging to different price categories, charming guesthouses provided with beauty centre and intimate residences which welcome both Italian and foreign families all year round.
The local spa establishment is one of the most modern and best equipped in Europe. The curative properties of the sulphur waters which flow from the nearby natural springs have been known since the Roman Age, as evidenced by the remains of ancient aqueducts. Thermal tourism has experienced steady developments thanks to the implementation of modern services and state-of-the-art facilities.
Not to be missed are the wonderful natural settings which surround the city centre, which are the ideal holiday destination for the lovers of trekking and open-air activities and cherish precious artistic and architectural beauties of great value.
The cultural tour across Trescore Balneario could start from Piazza Cavour, a medieval market square surrounded by impressive palaces and towers. Via della Chiesa leads to Villa Suardi and its park, which is occupied by the XV-century Church of St. Barbara and Brigida. The frescoes which embellish the inner walls were almost all realized by Lorenzo Lotto in 1524. The private chapel of the Suardi Counts, whose frescoes depict peculiar scenes of the life of Christ, the cycles of frescoes dedicated to the life of St. Brigida and St. Barbara and further wall paintings are some of the most representative examples of the ability of the great artist from Venice.
Among the most famous sacred buildings, not to be missed are the Church of St. John the Baptist, the parish church dedicated to St. Pietro and the church of Vergine Addolorata, which is also known as Madonna del Castello since it is situated a short distance from the medieval castle which once belonged to the Suardi Family. Walking along the central via Roma, tourists will have the opportunity to admire the fifteenth-century church of St. Bartolomeo, the church of St. Anthony Abbot and the medieval Palazzo delle Stanze, which was remodelled in the eighteenth century and is now the seat of the municipal library.
The southern part of the old town, which develops around the so-called Torre district, gathers the city's oldest buildings, such as the remains of the XII-century church of St. Cassiano and the Romanesque church of St. Vincenzo, which was realized in 1100 over the remains of a pre-existing sacred building dating back to the VIII century. Next to the church is Palazzo Bonicelli, an impressive building which rises over the remains of an ancient castle. Only its 20-metre-high IX-century tower has survived, and it has turned into the symbol of the surrounding district.
