Visiting Tortoreto

Tortoreto, which rises on the top of a 225-metre-high hill, is separated by the beaches of Tortoreto Lido by lush vineyards and ancient olive groves. It boasts breathtaking views over both the Adriatic Sea and the enchanting valleys of the hinterland, that is to say Vibrata and Salinello. In the background is the impressive Gran Sasso Massif.

Hotels in Tortoreto are situated just in the heart of the glorious surrounding countryside, just few kilometres far from the sea and from one of the most famous seaside resorts of Abruzzo: Tortoreto lido. In summer, the local farm houses and guest houses give guests the possibility to spend pleasant holidays in the hinterland of Abruzzo and to eat tasty traditional specialities while staying a short distance from the compelling beaches of the local coastline.

Tortoreto's peculiar town layout is characterized by narrow streets and mysterious nooks and crannies, the so-called “rue”. Walking down the streets of the city centre, visitors will have the possibility to admire steep stairs and picturesque houses which boast breathtaking views over the coast. Tortoreto still retains its original medieval architecture, and its centre is divided into three distinct areas: Terravecchia, Terranova and Borgo. Terravecchia is Tortoreto's orginal core. Surrounded by impressive city walls, it extends from the Clock Tower up to Palazzo Liberat. Terranova is connected with Terravecchia through a small bridge. A short distance from it is Borgo, the modern part of the town, which developed in the fifteenth century around the fortified stronghold.
Tortoreto gathers outstanding monuments, high arches and impressive towers. The city's most representative building is the church of St. Agostino, which was erected in 1613 by Agostino Tavani. The church contains precious paitings and artworks of great value, such as the seventeenth-century picture by Mattia Preti which is situated over the apse: “The Baptism of St. Agostino”. Tortoreto's local inhabitants call it “The powerful St. Agostino of Tortoreto”, and consider it very important.
Further monuments worthy of mention are the church of St. Nicola di Bari, the church of Madonna della Misericordia, which contains an important cycle of Renaissance frescoes by Giacomo Bonfini, the Clock Tower and the eighteen-century Palazzo Comunale.
