In the XIX century, extensive excavation works unearthed the remains of the ancient city of Oplontis, which was totally destroyed by the Vesuvius' eruption of 79 A.D. together with Pompei and Ercolano. It is still possible to visit the ruins of some beautiful villas dating back to the I sec. B. C., such as the famous Villa of Gens Poppea.
Torre Annunziata, which is provided with excellent connections with the city of Naples, also gathers three famous seaside resorts (Marina del Sole, della Salera, di Rovigliano) and several important spa establishments, which are famous all over the world for their precious volcanic waters.
Not to be missed is the city's most representative sacred building, the XV-century church of Ave Gratia Plena, that cherishes the miracolous icon of Madonna della Neve which was found at sea by some fishermen in the XIV century.
