Visiting Torgnon
Torgnon is a small municipality situated just in the heart of Valtournenche. The city itself and its 22 small hamlets are distributed across a large morainal layer dominated by Mount Cervino and their territory is situated at an altitude comprised between 800 and 3.320 metres above sea level.
During winter, Torgnon's large ski district, which gathers modern ski-lift facilities, 20 kilometres of snow-covered slopes, exciting cross-country trails and targeted areas for both children and beginners, attracts large numbers of Italian and foreign tourists, who will have the opportunity to stay at comfortable hotels situated a short distance from the slopes. Families and groups of friends can stay at comfortable residences or intimate mountain shelters and huts overlooking the slopes. In summer, the green meadows of the valley attract the lovers of nature and open-air activities. Charming guesthouses and holiday farms are the ideal point of departure for undertaking exciting excursions across the sunny landscapes of the surrounding area.
The old town of Torgnon and the ancient villages which are distributed across the valley are able to catch the attention of different kinds of tourists. The lovers of history and art will have the possibility to visit sumptuous buildings, outstanding monuments and impressive remains which bear witness to the fact the village had already been founded before the arrival of the Romans. Impressive ruins and ancient tools, which were unearthed in the nearby hamlets of Chaté and Chatrian, are the most important evidences dating back to the prehistory of these lands. Etirol's mill, the remains of an ancient hospice in Chevacour, ancient streets which were once used to transport livestock and large irrigation canals date back to the Middle Ages, when Torgnon and its territory became the object of fierce fighting between local lords. Folk traditions and ancient dances and songs still liven up the exciting local festivals dedicated to farming and pastoral activities, unmissable occasions to discover local usages and customs. The charming hamlet of Triatel, which is easily accessible from Torgnon walking through a charming 1,5-kilometre-long footpath, hosts a large complex of musuems dedicated to the village's history and traditions. Apart from the interesting exhibitions and traditional architectures of the so-called Musée Petit Monde, tourists will have the opportunity to enjoy the sweeping views over the surrounding Valtournenche offered by the nearby hamlet of Triatel.
Both in summer and in winter, sports lovers will have the opportunity to take advantage of targeted services and facilities and to perform different kinds of exciting activities. The thick forests and wide pastures which surround Torgnon's city centre are crossed by plenty of fascinating trekking, mountain biking and snowshoeing itineraries and also give tourists the possibility to perform plenty of open-air activities. The tourist offer is complemented by well-equipped tennis courts, football pitches, indoor rock climbing gyms, ice rinks, riding grounds, paragliding centres, enchanting lakes to perform sports fishing, Alpine skiing itineraries, cross-country trails, snow parks and plenty of exciting snow-covered slopes.
