Tirano, a historical municipality of the province of Sondrio, is idyllically set amidst the impressive mountains which rise along the boundary with Switzerland. It is bounded by the Orobian Alps to the south, Bernina Massif to the north and Stelvio Pass to the north-east.

Tirano's northern side boasts the most important religious monument of Valtellina, the Sanctuary of Madonna di Tirano. The building, which was erected in the sixteenth century on the site of a miraculous apparition of the Virgin, is characterized by an outstanding mixture of Renaissance and Baroque architectural patterns. The interiors are embellished by fine stuccos, elegant sculptures and precious frescoes, outstanding examples of the traditional Renaissance style from Lombardy. The sanctuary is formed by a nave and two aisles, and the whole complex is supported by eight red marble columns.
Other sacred buildings worthy of mention are the Collegiate Church of St. Martino, which contains outstanding frescoes and a precious organ, and the Church of St. Agostino, a sober building featuring elegant lines. Not to be missed are the Xenodochium of St. Perpetua, which is embellished by fine medieval frescoes, and the Xenodochium of St. Romerio, which rises on the top of an impressive 1800-metre-high cliff which overlooks Lake Poschiavo and lies entirely on Swiss territory. Tirano's most representative stately homes are Palazzo Salis, which boasts an outstanding sixteenth-century facade and plenty of interesting museums, the elegant Palazzo Venosta, the monumental Palazzo Merizzi and the ancient Omodei medieval castle, the so-called Castellaccio.
