Visiting Termoli

Termoli is an enchanting coastal resort which is totally surrounded by impressive medieval walls. The core of the city rises on the top of an imposing promontory which falls sheer to the Adriatic Sea. This ancient fishing village is the most important seaside resort of the whole region. The Ancient Village is divided from the modern part of the city, which extends towards the hinterland and cherishes the most precious treasures from the past.

Termoli's panoramic hotels, which gather comfortable spaces and elegant settings, give guests the possibility to enjoy breathtaking views over the underlying landscapes. The guest houses of the old town rise amidst ancient narrow streets, and are surrounded by the numerous waterways which flow outside the city walls. The local residences, which are surrounded by a lush vegetation and situated few metres far from the beach, give guests the possibility to spend pleasant holidays based on the utmost relax, and make the ideal base for undertaking exciting excursions to the nearby Tremiti Islands.

Termoli's most representative historical-artistic attraction is the Swabian Castle, which was built in the mid fifteenth century as a defensive bulwark overlooking the Adriatic Sea. The city's Cathedral, whose current structure dates back to the XII - XIII century, boasts a sumptuous facade which was realized according to the canons of the typical Apulian style. Not to be missed are the so-called trabucchi, wooden fishing "machines" attached to the rocks which were invented by the Phoenicians. Termoli's harbour is an important port of embarkation to Croatia and the Tremiti Islands, and also plays a fundamental role in the local economy, since it gathers both fishing vessels and pleasure boats. One of the city's most fascinating events is the Fire of the Castle, a picturesque historical recollection which stages the assault on the ancient village which took place in 1566 at the hands of the Ottoman fleet headed by Pialj Pascià. It is staged on August 15 and attracts large numbers of tourists and curious people.
