Piazza Garibaldi, which is also known as Piazza Maggiore, is one of the largest squares in Italy. It gathers plenty of outstanding monuments and buildings, such as the impressive Church of St. Chiara, a huge thirteenth-century monastic complex which was totally rebuilt by Pietro Fantoni in 1711. Its splendid Baroque interior cherishes some precious paintings by Sebastiano Conca and Altiero Salini and a marvellous picture gallery. The square is also dominated by an ancient medieval aqueduct which was built in 1256 under the rule of Manfredi. This 100-metre-long structure, which is made up of 21 arches, is regarded to be one of the most fascinating monuments in Sulmona. Not to be missed are the sumptuous historical palaces of the square, such as Palazzo Tabassi, Palazzo Sanità, Palazzo Meliorati and Palazzo Capograssi.
A short distance from the city centre are the famous remains of the temple of Ercole Curino. Among the most interesting Roman remains which have been unearthed over the last centuries, not to be missed are the ruins of the villa of the Latin poet Ovid, who was born in Sulmona in 43 B.C. Nowadays, Sulmona is famous all over the world for the production of Jordan almonds, which are even celebrated by the local Museum of Jordan almonds' art and technology.
