Visiting Staffolo
Staffolo, a small municipality of the province of Ancona, is situated on the top of a sweet panoramic hill which rises 442 metres above sea level, and boasts breathtaking views over the glorious underlying landscapes and the Adriatic Sea.
The old town gathers small and intimate family-run guest houses which welcome guests with the utmost warmth and hospitality. The glorious surrounding countryside is scattered with fascinating farm houses, which are the ideal accommodation facilities for families with children and those interested in tasting genuine local staples and fine local wines. The city centre also hosts some intimate bed and breakfasts, while the major routes which lead to the nearby resorts are peppered with comfortable hotels and guest houses.
Staffolo's fascinating ancient village was founded in the VI - VII century. During the Middle Ages, it was repeatedly destroyed and reconstructed, but it still retains impressive medieval walls and a picturesque village gathering plenty of precious finds and remains. Staffolo's most representative artwork is the precious XV-century five-panel painting by the so-called Maestro di Staffolo, which is cherished inside the church of St. Egidio.
Not to be missed is the XII-century church of St. Francesco, whose simple lines are dramatically offset by the sumptuous Baroque decorations of the nearby church of St. Maria dela Castellaretta.
