Visiting Spello
The charming resort of Spello is situated north of Foligno, along the major road which leads to Assisi. It is idyllically set amidst sweet hills and lush valleys, and is totally carpeted with fertile cereal fields, ancient vines and flourishing olive groves. Situated on the slopes of Mount Subasio, it was founded by the Umbrian population and then called Hispellum by the Romans. It is one of the most appreciated villages of the surrounding area, since it gathers plenty of outstanding Roman and Renaissance monuments and buildings, as well as tasty delicacies and excellent local staples, such as the local oil, which is even celebrated by amazing trade fairs and events.
Spello gathers a remarkably wide array of hotels and accommodation facilities. The glorious surrounding countryside is scattered with charming farm houses and intimate bed and breakfasts, which are the ideal accommodation facilities for those interested in spending pleasant holidays here based on the utmost relax while experiencing a closer touch with nature. The city centre is peppered with typical guest houses which give guests the possibility to spend pleasant holidays here based on the utmost comfort while eating tasty traditional specialities from the surrounding area.
Spello's cosy old town attracts large numbers of art lovers, since the Collegiate Church of St. Maria Maggiore and the Church of St. Andrea contain precious artworks by Pinturicchio. Not to be missed is the local Palazzo Comunale, which cherishes interesting Roman inscriptions, two Flavian portraits and the famous Constantine's Rescript, which dates back to the IV century A.D.
Not to be missed are the Romanesque Church of St. Claudio, the late-Roman Villa of Sant'Anna and its precious mosaics, and Villa Fidelia, which is often the venue for great concerts and important cultural events. The city's most important festivals are the spectacular so-called Infiorata, which takes place every year on the occasion of Corpus Christi, the Olive Festival and the Festival of Bruschetta, which is held here in December to celebrate Spello's most important product: oilve oil.
