Visiting Specchia

Specchia, one of the “most beautiful villages in Italy” is situated in the province of Lecce, and rises on the top of a gentle hill which overlooks the southern Salentine Peninsula. It derives its name from the local heaps of Messapian cone-shaped calcareous slabs, the so-called specchie.

Those interested in visiting the city and admiring its major beauties will have the opportunity to stay at the comfortable hotels of the old town, while the city's modern and welcoming guest houses are situated a short distance from the sea. Specchia's small and intimate bed and breakfasts and charming farm houses, which are situated far from chaos and traffic congestion and are surrunded by a lush Mediterranean scrub, give guests the possibility to spend pleasant holidays here based on the utmost rest and relax.

Specchia's medieval old town, which is characterized by narrow streets, mysterious nooks and crannies and impressive staircases, is dominated by Castle Protonobilissimo Risolo. After the extensive restoration works which took place in 1600 and 1700, this fortified sixteenth-century structure featuring quadrangular plan was provided with a wide loggia and a majestic merloned tower.
In front of the castle's portal is the Parish Church of Madonna dell’Assunta, which was erected in 1605. Its interior cherishes precious Baroque altars (the most important one being Madonna dell’Assunta), which were largely made of local stone from Lecce.
Specchia's glorious landscape is scattered with plenty of imposing megalithic monuments, such as Dolmens, Menhirs and so-called Specchie. Walking across the surrounding countryside, visitors will have the opportunity to admire ancient rural houses (the so-called Pajaru) and long dry-stone walls.
Cardigliano Farm, which is also known as Borgo Cardigliano, stands a short distance from the city, on the top of a sweet hill which overlooks the Salentine Murge. In 1930 the complex, which was originally used as an agricultural-industrial centre for tobacco production, was turned into a real village. In order to safeguard the beauty and historical relevance of this small village (which was abandoned in the 70s), Specchia's local authorities and the Ministry of Environment turned it into a splendid eco-village fostering energy conservation.
