Soncino, a fascinating village which is situated in the province of Cremona, is idyllically set just in the heart of Lombardy, halfway between Brescia and Bergamo. Its privileged position along the banks of the river Oglio contributed to the formation and development of numerous resurgences.

The city's most representative monument is the huge Sforzesca Fortress. Commissioned by the Sforza Lords of Milan to suit defensive purposes, the impressive building is made up of a large courtyard surrounded by three quadrangular towers and one circular tower, the latter cherishing a legendary treasure.
Not to be missed is the House of the Pressmen, which was once the residence of the Jewish family who printed the first Hebrew Bible in 1488. It is now the seat of the Museum of Printing.
Soncino gathers three wonderful churches. The most ancient one, the Parish Church of St. Maria Assunta, cherishes a precious painting by Matthias Stom. The ancient street which once led to Cremona is dominated by the church of St. Maria delle Grazie, which was erected in 1500 thanks to generous donations from local inhabitants. Its plain facade is dramatically offset by a sumptuously decorated interior, which contains precious artworks of great value, such as the ten side chapels and the spledidly frescoed presbytery. The XIV-century church of St. Giacomo was originally used as a pilgrim hospital, but was later turned into the city's parish church and given to the Lateran Canonicals of St. Cataldo of Cremona. The beautiful cloisters which embellish it were realized in the XV century by Dominican friars, who also commissioned the building of a chemist's and of an important library. The adjoining monastery cherishes the mortal remains of  Beata Stafana Quinzani, as well as a precious earthenware Pietà by De Staulis.
