Every year on the last May Sunday since the XVI-century, Silvi has staged the popular “Lu Ciancialone” festival. Local inhabitants strive to build a huge ten-metre-high cylinder made of plaited reeds. The cylinder, the so-called Lu Ciancialone, is then set on fire and people dance and sing around it. This tradition dates back to the Seventeenth century, when a miraculous event is said to have occurred in Silvi. Legend has it that a little torch brought by a brave boy became so bright that it was able to frighten a whole army of Moorish pirates who had come here to sack the city.
