Sasso Marconi, a small municipality of the province of Bologna, nestles on the slopes of the first reliefs of the local Apennines, and extends across the lower valley of the river Reno. Known as Praduro and Sasso since the first half of the XX century, it is dominated by an impressive sandstone spur belonging to the local “Contrafforte pliocenico”, the so-called Sasso Glosina. Its current name derives from that of the famous Italian physicist and inventor Guglielmo Marconi.

Another building worthy of mention is Villa Achillini, that is also known as “Villa delle Tre Torrette”.  Commissioned by the poet Claudio Anchillini from Bologna at the beginning of the seventeenth century, it is surrounded by three stepped towers, and its interior contains the precious so-called "Boschereccia” hall.
The lovely hamlet of Pontecchio, that is situated 4 kilometres far from the city centre, is home to Villa Griffone and Marconi Mausoleum. Erected in the XVII century by the homonymous family, it was then acquired by Giuseppe Marconi, the father of the famous inventor, around the half of the nineteenth century. In this building, that is now home to an interesting museum and an important research centre, Guglielmo Marconi made his first radio transmission experiments in 1895.
