Visiting Santo Stefano Al Mare
Santo Stefano al Mare, a small municipality of the province of Imperia, develops along the splendid coastline of the Western Riviera, and extends between Punta Santo Stefano and the mouth of the stream Fiumara di Taggia. This enchanting coastal centre, that is situated 13 kilometres far from the provincial capital, develops amidst glorious landscapes, compelling beaches of fine sand, lush terraced gardens and flourishing cultivations.
Those staying at hotels in Santo Stefano al Mare, that are situated just in the heart of the old town, will have the possibility to admire the city's precious historical and cultural heritage. The local guest houses, that distribute a short distance from the tourist harbour of Marina degli Aregai, gather comfortable bedrooms that give tourists the possibility to enjoy breathtaking views over the sea. Santo Stefano al Mare's farm houses, that are set amidst the lush terraced hills of the Western Riviera, give guests the possibility to undertake plesant excursions across the hinterland of Valle Argentina, as well as to make funny boat trips along the Ligurian coastline.
The central Piazza Cavour is dominated by the thirteenth-century Parish Church of St. Stefano, that was totally rebuilt in the Baroque style during the eighteenth century. Its interior cherishes precious artworks of great value, such as a beautiful polychrome wooden statue depicting St. Stefano sculpted by Giovanni Dimck and a splendid XV-century font. The parish church is flanked by the Oratory of St. Christ, that was erected towards the end of the XVII century. It contains a famous “Pietà” painted by the Renaissance artist Ludovico Brea and a wood crucifix of Saint Christ that was realized around the end of the fifteenth century.
The lovers of history and architecture won't miss the opportunity to visit the so-called Enneagonal Tower, the only one in Italy with nine sides, that was erected in the sixteenth century to suit defensive purposes. This building, that has been the seat of the local Town Hall since 1987, is surrounded by suspended bartizans and has a single entrance gate. Rio della Torre is flanked by the impressive remains of an ancient Roman stone bridge (I century A.D.) that was discovered in 1932.
In May, the tourist harbour of Marina degli Aregai arranges the popular Aregai in Fiore review, an outstanding plant-growing exhibition that is enriched by a peculiar section dedicated to essential oils.
