Sanremo, a splendid city of the province of Imperia, is idyllically set halfway between the hills and the sea, and extends just in the middle of a wide cove nestling on the slopes of Mount Bignone. This charming resort, that is situated 24 kilometrs far from the provincial capital, is also known as the “City of Flowers”, and is one of the most prestigious tourist centres of the Western Riviera.

One of the city's most important religious monuments is the fascinating Russian Church of Christ the Saviour, that was erected at the beginning of the XX century. This sumptuous Byzantine building is crowned by five domes covered with polychrome tiles surmounted by three-armed Russian crosses. The sweet “Pigna” hill, that was once the seat of the original Sanremo's settlement, is topped by the XVII-century Sanctuary of Madonna della Costa, that boasts a splendid Baroque facade, a huge central dome and several side towers surmounted by small cupolas.
Tha major gathering place for gambling enthusiasts coming from all over Italy and Europe is the city's Municipal Casino, that was inaugurated in 1905. This splendid Art-nouveau building extends across 2500 square metres, and is subdivided into several distinct rooms, such as the sixteenth-century Salone delle feste, that hosted the first edition of the popular Festival of the Italian Song.
Villa Nobel, an elegant Moorish mansion that was built in 1870, hosts an interesting permanent exhibition gathering the major inventions of 800, the so-called "Discover Ottocento”.
Not to be missed in the nearby hamlet of Foce are the important archaeological remains of Villa Matutia, an ancient Roman villa that is flanked by a huge thermal complex dating back to the II - III century A.D.
