San Vito dei Normanni, a small municipality of the Salentine Peninsula situated in the province of Brindisi, extends south of Ostuni across the Salentine plain and is located 9 kilometres far from the Adriatic Coast. Legend has it that this village was founded by Boemondo d’Altavilla, the son of the Norman captain Roberto il Guiscardo, at the end of the XI century. The presence of a square Norman Tower, which is the city's most representative landmark and rises just in the heart of the main square in front of the Town Hall, may confirm the truth of the legend.

The fascinating medieval village of San Vito dei Normanni, which is surrounded by the glorious Salentine countryside and fully carpeted with ancient vines, olive groves and almond groves, is a privileged holiday destination for the lovers of both nature, art and culture, who will have the opportunity to visit the city's major monuments departing from their hotels. Tourists should visit  San Vito dei Normanni on the occasion of the two summer folk festivals which are held here, the Festival of August 15 and the Patronal Festival taking place in the second weekend of July, which give them the possibility to attend special shows and events livened up by the so-called pizzica sanvitese, a traditional Salentine dance of ancient origins.

The tour of the old town could start from the Castle Dentice di Frasso, an impressive sixteenth-century building situated next to the Norman Tower whose interior cherishes precious frescos and paintings and the Historical Archives of the city. One of the most beautiful churches in San Vito dei Normanni is the sixteenth-century Basilica. The majestic Baroque Church of St. John the Evangelist, which was largerly built of local stone from Lecce and embellished with outstanding decorations, is the most representative example of the typical architectural style from the Salentine Peninsula.
The nearby hamlet of San Biagio is home to the Byzantine Sanctuary of St. Biagio, which is hosted inside a cave. Tourists will have the possibility to visit the monks' cells while admiring original frescos and inscriptions. Not to be missed are the rock buildings of the surrounding area, such as the Crypts of St. Nicola, St. Giovanni and St. Maria di San Giacomo al casale.
Just in the heart of the charming village of San Vito dei Normanni is the Municipal Villa, a large park gathering ancient cluster pines and palm trees. The lovers of nature will have the possibility to visit the WWF Natural Reserve of Torre Guaceto, situated in the charming seaside resort of Serranova. This unspoilt environmental oasis gathers plenty of fascinating footpaths and cycle itineraries.
